Record companies placed the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that is a success or we'll take you off the market" and the pressure was on them to deliver. Toto was able to do this feat with the help of the hit song "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is a result of their prior experience since the members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior to forming the group. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for 1980s music, and has inspired a lot of contemporary artists.
The album opens up hard with tracks like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. The album also has some more mellow, jazzy tracks, like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album ends with Great Expectations. This song mixes folk and the distorted AOR that could appear completely unnatural, but actually works very well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes changed to the downside. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career. The band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the wake of drug charges and the band continued as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. However, the group was able to release a chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was also the first to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was a return to a traditional sextet style, and an even more consistent and powerful effort with a harder edge. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's improved proficiency on the drums, as well as an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more precise, sharper, and less derivative than earlier recordings.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The studio album came out shortly after, and the band embarked on an extensive world tour in support of the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the band's first album without a single song titled "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and singer Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis infection which hampered his singing. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially restructuring the band. This lineup, minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also featured a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
