Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band a much-needed boost.

The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a huge tour around the world. After a few weeks in Europe The band then travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa on the recent tour. Toto's touring group is comprised by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
